William Holtzclaw reached out to other educational leaders throughout his long career at Utica. He established a relationship with Mississippi College president John W. Provine through annual visits of the Jubilee Singers to the college, apparently performing without a fee. During a fuel crisis in 192x, Provine sold Holtzclaw fuel for the Utica electric plant on credit and in return Holtzclaw offered to install clean burning coal oil stoves in the MC Chapel. Over a period of more than 20 years, the letters in the MC Presidential Archives show a developing friendship between the two men.
